The “Protista” kingdom under eukarya

There are three categories under Protista:

1. Animal-like Protists (Protozoa)

These organisms are heterotrophs (they consume other organisms for food) and most are motile.

  • Amoebas: Move and feed using temporary extensions of their cytoplasm called pseudopodia.

  • Ciliates: Covered in short, hair-like cilia that they beat to swim and move food into their "mouth". A common example is Paramecium.

  • Flagellates: Use one or more long, whip-like flagella for movement. Examples include Euglena (which can also photosynthesize) and parasites like Trypanosoma, which causes sleeping sickness.

  • Sporozoans: Non-motile parasites whose life cycles often have a spore-like stage. Plasmodium, the parasite that causes malaria, is a well-known example

2. Plant-like Protists (Algae)

These are autotrophs that perform photosynthesis like plants due to the presence of chloroplasts. They range from microscopic single cells to large multicellular organisms like seaweed.

  • Diatoms: Unicellular algae with unique, ornate cell walls made of silica that fit together like a box and lid.

  • Dinoflagellates: Mostly marine and have two flagella that cause them to spin as they move. Some are bioluminescent and can cause harmful "red tides".

  • Red algae and Brown algae: These can be unicellular, colonial, or multicellular (such as giant kelp) and are the primary producers in many aquatic food chains.

3. Fungus-like Protists (molds)

These organisms are heterotrophs that obtain nutrients by absorbing organic material from a host.

  • Slime molds: Spend most of their lives as single amoeba-like cells but can aggregate to form a large, slug-like mass (plasmodium) to reproduce and form spores.

  • Water molds (Oomycetes): Often filamentous in form and include serious plant pathogens, such as the one responsible for the Irish potato famine (Phytophthora infestans).
