2D vs 3D Cultures

In 2D culture model, cells grow attached to a 2-dimensional surface. In 3D culture model, cells grow in suspension in the bulk liquid.

2D culturing vessels are better suited for adherent cell lines (which form tissue) and for making microbial or yeast colonies. The 2D culturing vessels are suited for scaling out.

3D culturing vessels are better suited for growing suspension-adapted cell lines and microbial/yeast strains. The 3D culturing vessels are suited for scaling up.
