Financial Burden

For Pharmacy Technician, the financial burden of attending pharmacy technician school is lower than that of a doctorate, but it still requires significant investment relative to entry-level earnings. The cost varies widely based on whether the program is an online/remote or in-person, in-state or out-of-state student, certificate program or Associate Degree at a community college.

Tuition and Program Costs (2025)

Tuition is the largest expense and varies by institution type:

  • Online Certificate Programs: These are the most affordable, typically ranging from $500 to $3,300.

  • Private Trade Schools: Intensive diploma programs can cost between $12,000 and $20,000.

  • Associate Degree (2-year): The most expensive route, with total tuition potentially reaching $30,000 to $40,000

Licensure and Certification Costs (2025)

To practice, graduates must pay for national exams and state licensing, often out-of-pocket:

  • National Certification Exams: The PTCE costs $129, while the ExCPT (NHA) is roughly $117–$125.

  • State Application Fees: These vary by state.

  • Renewal and CE: Maintaining certification requires 20 hours of continuing education every two years, with renewal fees ranging from $20 to $55.
